Danish Cartoon Affair: Letter from a Muslim

The Brussels Journal has been closely following the Danish cartoon affair. Unlike the meanstraim media, who (apart from Denmark) are not interested in the case, we think it is very important for the future of Europe. Today we received a long email from a Muslim reader explaining why he takes offence at two of the twelve cartoons (see them here) published last September in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. Islam prohibits depictions of the Muslim prophet Muhammad. When a Danish author complained that he could not find an artist to illustrate his book about Muhammad, the paper decided to ask Danish cartoonists to draw them pictures of the prophet. Our reader’s letter is published below. But first, the latest events in this ongoing case.

An influential Islamic organisation, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), has called upon its 51 member states to boycott Denmark unless the Danish government “presents an official apology for the drawings that have offended the world’s Muslims.” Last Thursday, the foreign ministers of the 22 members of the Arab League also expressed their dissatisfaction with the Danish government. They demand that the Danish government change its attitude. So far Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen has consistently refused to interfere, saying that his government has no power over what the media do.

Rasmussen has made it clear that people who feel that Jyllands-Posten has broken the law, should bring the matter to court instead of demanding media censorship from the government. According to Troels Lund, Rasmussen’s foreign affairs spokesman, the criticism of the Arab league will not make Copenhagen change its position. “It is important to stand our ground and say that we have a separation of powers in Denmark and something called freedom of expression,” Lund said.

Here is the letter of our Muslim reader, who lives in Canada:

Even in a democratic society with strong protections for freedom of speech and press, there are still limits that must be imposed. I have viewed all the cartoons and in terms of content, only two of them seem to me to be particulary problematic. Let me first say that I am a Muslim but I grew up and still live in North America, so I am accustomed to seeing newspaper cartoons that satirize every imaginable subject. Also, while there is a general prohibition among Muslims of graphically depicting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) and the other Prophets, such as Moses, Abraham and Jesus (peace be on them), that prohibition has never been absolute and in certain periods there have been images of the Prophets, although their faces are either featureless or covered by a veil). Of course those pictures were made to illustrate religious texts, not to criticize the Prophets.

Personally, the simple artistic depiction of the Prophet Muhammad by a non-Muslim does not particulary bother me, any more than the depiction of Jesus or the other prophets in, for example Renaissance Art. The two cartoons that I personally find offensive are the ones that depict Muhammad as a knife-wielding terrorist and as wearing a turban that is in fact a bomb that bears the Islamic creed, “There is no divinity but God and Muhammad is his prophet”.

Of course, I have seen in my lifetime many editorial cartoons that I personally found to be offensive and almost all of them were about subjects far removed from Islam. A cartoonist has the right to draw and I have the right to be offended. Generally, nothing more needs to be said or done. However, as a society, we must take into account the sensibilities of others.

The Danish case is particularly interesting because the intention of the newspaper was to stir up controversy. The intention was to offend Muslims. The newspaper set out to provoke and they succeeded. It is strange that having succeeded they and their supporters are so incensed over the reaction. Contrast the Danish publisher’s approach with that of U.S. newspapers. In the U.S., freedom of speech and press is almost absolute. Even so, on a few occasions in recent years when an editorial cartoon has elicited a large critical outcry, in most cases, the newspaper has apologized to offended readers, pointing out that the intention of the artist was to express an opinion, that the freedom to express an opinion is guaranteed and must be protected but that in hindsight it is apparent that the same message could have been conveyed without unnecessarily insulting a significant number of readers.

In your article, you refer to Madame Louise Arbour, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, who is quoted as saying the cartoons were “an unacceptable disrespect”. Madame Arbour is a Canadian and she was for many years a respected judge in Canada. It is likely that her opinion in this matter is coloured by her experience as a Canadian jurist. Here in Canada, we have for many years had to reconcile a VERY multi-cultural society with our constitutional protections on freedom of speech and press. As a result, our basic freedoms are not absolute. We have a constitutional principal that basic rights are “subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.”

Two of those reasonable limitations concern “blasphemous libel” and “hate propaganda”. The criminal statute outlawing hate propaganda bars the WILLFUL promotion of hatred, which is defined as “communicating statements, other than in private conversation, wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group.” The law allows for certain defences. A person cannot, for example, be convicted “if he establishes that the statements communicated were true” or “if the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit [thus unlikely to cause public disorder], and if on reasonable grounds he believed them to be true.” Furthermore, no conviction can be obtained if the statement was to express in good faith an opinon on a religious matter, UNLESS that expression contravenes the blasphemous libel statute.

The blasphemous libel statute has rarely been used in Canada, but it remains in full force and effect. Under it, people can still argue against and criticize religious beliefs and persons but only with tact and circumspection. The statute says that “No person shall be convicted of an offence under this section for expressing in good faith and in decent language, or attempting to establish by argument used in good faith and conveyed in decent language, an opinion on a religious subject.”

What I am trying to point out here is that in Canadian law, our Parliament has protected freedom of speech on the one hand and sought, on the other hand, to limit any disruption of the social fabric by outlawing speech that is so intemperate that it could lead to public disorder or violence.

Of course, another aspect of the Danish affair is that the cartoons were not published in a vacuum. They were published against the backdrop of widespread anti-Muslim prejudice and of incendiary statements likely to provoke hate against Muslims in Denmark. The decision to publish them came only a few months after Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark was quoted in the London Telegraph as saying: “We have to show our opposition to Islam and we have to, at times, run the risk of having unflattering labels placed on us because there are some things for which we should display no tolerance.”

The Queen of Denmark (who is also titular Head of the State Lutheran Chruch) has called on her subjects to oppose Islam and to display intolerance even in the face of public criticism. (She obviously is unaware of the respectful position of most Christian churches, including her own, on Islam). If Her Majesty Elizabeth II, the Queen of Canada (or her Governor General) ever said such words, there would be a constitutional crisis and calls for the Sovereign herself to be charged with inciting race hatred under the Canada Criminal Code.

In a recent private letter to me, a Danish Lutheran theologian and social activist, had, in part, this to say:

“We are facing a difficult time in Denmark right now. Many people and consequently also many politicians are worried and afraid of the presence of Muslims in Denmark. We have about 4 % of the population which is Muslim today. In the 90s the rightist populist party Dansk Folekparti (Danish People's Party) campaigned against the Muslims and other immigrants, but after 9-11 (2001) other parties joined in the chorus and at the election in November 2001 it was the main theme. The press from the beginning added fuel to the fire by focusing almost entirely on the problems with Muslims/immigrants and has presented social issues involving immigrants from a religious/Muslim angle. Finally our dear Queen has joined the populist chorus by her very problematic statements concerning some of her subjects, the Muslims!

(...) A number of individual members of the Lutheran church, including pastors and sometimes also bishops (and my humble self), have again and again spoken up against this campaign against Muslims. (...)

Nine of the ten dioceses in the Lutheran Church in Denmark have set up an organization called ‘Folkekirke og Religionsmøde’ (Folk church and Religious Encounter, or Church and Dialogue). I was the chairman for this organization for the first 3 years and we have worked to create a positive awareness among congregations concerning their Muslim neighbours. We have established a national dialogue forum with leaders of Muslim groups, and we are publishing materials to educate the congregations.”

Those, like yourself, who speak out in favour of freedom of speech and press should also speak out against the raising tide in Denmark of racial and religious intolerance. The Danish cartoon affair is NOT just a test of basic freedoms, it is a concerted attack on a visible minority and that attack is being waged not only by incendiary cartoonists but also by government officials included the Queen of Denmark herself.

Meanwhile in Sweden a jeans manufacturer, Bjorn Atldax, has designed a jeans brand with an anti-Christian logo: a skull with a cross turned upside down on its forehead. “It is an active statement against Christianity,” Atldax told The Associated Press. “I have a great dislike for organized religion.” He says he wants to make young people question Christianity, which he calls a “force of evil.” He added that he has plans “to make something anti-Hindu because I think its caste system is awful.” But he is not considering any anti-Islamic designs because “there are already a lot of anti-Islamic sentiments.”

As a Caribbean blogger observes: “By his willingness to offend Christians and Hindus, and his hands off attitude to Islam, Atldax is proving himself to be very European.” We trust that the UN’s Louise Ardour, the EU’s Franco Frattini and the Council of Europe will respond in the same way to Bjorn Atldax’s jeans as to Jyllands-Posten’s cartoons, and demand that the Swedish government take the same actions as they want the Danish government to take. Or will they, too, prove themselves to be “very European”?

Polluted how?

"try polluting someones source of life, try drowning someone and see if he will not fight back at least for just one gasp!"

So your source of life is Islam and we're trying to drown it with 12 cartoons and you respond by making bomb threats? You are more weak minded than I thought which is probably why Islam appeals to you so much.

Muslims lack the ability to reason with anything other than suicide bombers. When has the muslim community EVER apologized for deaths caused by other muslims? They haven't because they support killing people of other religions.

to anonymous

first of all i can see that u r so considered to show how much u hate islam and this is up to u but i wanna told u that whatever ur religion i guess that u were ordered to respect other religions whether u u see it convincing or not ,so u should respect islam ,and respecting the rights of peoples sharing with u the same life is a sign of civilization and democracy allover the world .
for ur informations our precious islam ordered us to respect other religions from many thousands of years a sign to show how great is our islam and also u should know that such trivial cartoons won't change the life of muslims because we are much stronger than a narrow minded person who thought that these trivial cartoons would insult islam ,so poor person really.whatever u r it seems that u r the one who isweak minded because ur words about islam shows how ignorant u r about history especially the history of europe as all their civilization was brought from islamic civilization because itwas very rich and islamiccountries were an economic and a scientific power without any competetor and uptillnow there a continuation for the brilliant muslims mind which is ahmed zewail a noble prize laureate in chemistry and he is a muslim look at his achievements first then talk about islam.and about saying that muslims can only bomb theirselves i want to ask something i can see that u love ur country candaso what will u do if an enemy came and occupied ur country?will u standstill or will u defend it by ur sole?so if u don't have any weapons to defend it and ur enemy is very strong considering weapons,u will use ur body as a weapon do defend ur beloved country as a finalchoice that u can have and our precious islam ordered us to love the country we live in so much i guess that is not a weakminded thinking sir anonymous as u should see the circumstances which made this people use themselves as a weapon to defend their land.as i told rene before u should read first before talking about anything especially our dear islam

Open your Minds & Hearts

The truth is, as a believing Christian, I am very much on the same page as most of you who visit this site. Right Wing Politics and Christian beliefs tend to resemble each other.

However, I believe the Canadian writer of this letter has some valid points and should not just be discounted because we might not like or agree with all of his text.

The most interesting point he raises is about the intentions of the paper and I have long thought about this...that the paper was testing the limits to create a reaction and in the realm of mainstream media this was in poor taste. Freedom of speach is one thing, but to test the waters knowning that some people will be offended by your actions is not very responsible for a major newspaper.

Nonetheless, I do feel way too much attention is being given this from a governmental level both from Muslim nations as well as the European Union. I have seen in these articles that Danish Prime Minister Rasmussen has refused to take any action against the paper and he is correct in this. However, I am curious if he has at least shown some critism of the paper for being insensitive. It would seem to be the ideal response: Protect freedom of speach by refusing to do anything official, but still make it clear that he feels the paper acted irresponsibly.

Paul, your last point was a good tie-in. Of course, we all know that is wishful thinking. The E.U. will remain hypocritical and won't even say a thing about those Swedish jeans. It is clear that a public policy of tolerance is actually an exercise in self-denial of our heritage.

Lord, grant me the strength to change the things I can;

the serenity to deal with the things I cannot change;

and the wisdom to know the difference.

It might not be very

It might not be very responsible for a major newspaper but these 'testing waters' do indicate something important. Christians may be offended but at least you wont receive several diplomats at your doorstep demanding govermental intervention, nor death threats from the muslim population (or segments from it).
A sign that Muslims in Europe do not accept the Leitkultur-principle; havnt integrated or are radicalising.

The Danish Queen did N O T instruct to show opposition to islam!

To correct the lie about the Queen of Denmark as quoted by the telegraph as instructing to show opposition to islam:

The TRUE text of what the Queen said can be found here - as i translated it to English as soon as it was published in the Danish Newspapers.
http://enough.typepad.com/enough/2005/04/thank_you_my_qu.html

The bullshit lies stated by the telegraph on http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/04/15/wqueen15.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/04/15/ixworld.html are clearly fabricated out of mean-spiritedness: she says "opposition has to be shown" but no where is the word of "islam" even mentioned - nowhere!

Danish cartoon affair / Letter from Muslim

Thank you to Brussels Journal for keeping this subject in the spot lights and thanks to the "Muslim Reader" from Canada for his wise and insightful comments.

A few things keep bothering me, however:

(i) I don't think we are in disagreement about the fact that the cartoons were offensive. I'm sure they were. Hey, as a Christian and Catholic, I'm offended EVERY DAY by the press. So, I feel your pain, brother. But that's not the issue here. The question is: was the response of the Muslims appropriate in a liberal democracy and two, was the response of the Danish government vis-à-vis the newspapers appropriate. The answer to the first question remains NO. The answer to the second question remains YES.

(ii) Freedom of speech should be unlimited: if you limit it, it disapears. Candadian laws like the ones quoted by our Muslim friend scare the heck out of me, because you know where you start, but not where you end up. The only response to offensive speech is more speech, not government intervention which is always determined by the "taste of the day".

(iii) Yes, the cartoons were offensive (why am I not surprised). But we still cannot approve of the manner in which the Muslim community around the world has been responding to this. Such response is a disgrace for the Muslims and just another argument for those who are expressing their fear for Islam. Those who are afraid of Islam have JUST been confirmed in their fear: "I told you so"... Again, we should compare the response of the Muslim community with other religious organizations defending their believes, like for example the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights (http://www.catholicleague.org/) who within the US system of freedom of speech is able to fight very successfully against offensive anti-Catholic and anti-Christian speech and behavior, often together with other Christian, Jewish and even Muslim organizations. They succeed in obtaining apologies, retractions and change in policies without resorting to laws that force people to use "tact and circumspection" (whatever that may mean...) or even worse, to threats to blow people up in the name of religion. And let us also not forget that the Danish government is CORRECT, at least from a Liberal-Democratic perspective, NOT to intervene vis-à-vis the newspapers.

Finally, I am waiting for the day that "Muslim readers" first unanimously disavow the violence practiced and preached by their fellow Muslims (today in Indonesia for example), and only then participate in the civilized debate about religious intolerance.

Bart

Dear Sirs, Even though I am

Dear Sirs,

Even though I am christian, I felt sorry for all the anger and frustration of my Muslim Egyptian friends and people in Egypt. I am for the freedom of speach and opinion, but I agree that some religious symbols should not be touched or judged as it will result more hatriate and vilence more that what already exist in this burning world. I also feel painful when any media make fun of Jesus and Christianity symbols or traditions. In Summary, If we want the others to respect our believes, we have to respect theirs too. Thank you

Danish cartoon affair / Letter from Muslim

We all shall be scared and do something about it. Islam is a cult not a religion. The followers of this cult are basically zombies and here is the danger. No government dared to say the truth and here is the major problem. Koran preaches hate towards non Muslims AND Muslims as well when they are not "Muslims enough". There is a river of Muslims invading our Western World. The more they come, the worst things will become. To stop the flood the Governments shall publicly acknowledge that Islam is a cult of hate and death and no good (practicing) Muslim shall be allowed in the country. As being a cult of hate and death it is NOT a religion, so the followers of this cult are prohibited from practicing in our countries. Close all mosques and deport all hate spreading imams and mullahs. We shall welcome all "bad Muslims" who can prove they apostate this cult. What a dream!!! No Government has the guts to do it. So we are either doomed to fail to this barbaric cult or heading to civil wars or worse World wars. I am scared of any of these scenarios. For the sceptics about ISLAM as a cult of death and hate, check this out:

Religion of Peace

I dunno what the heck you have been reading and where you are getting you info but your wrong. I have done extended studies in Islam. Im only 16 yeah but I have learned alot. Islam is a religion of peace. We respect all other religions although we dont agree with them. Yeah we may call everyone who is not a muslim a Kaafir cause thats what it mean. A non-Muslim is a Kaafir. We do not hate non-Muslims. I have many friends and talk to many people around the world. The only people who say such bad things about a peaceful religion are either jealous. Scared of the few (now its many) who have been led astray from the true path. Or they just don't like us for our Laws. I am also Canadian with Indian background and country has nothing to do with this. Its propoganda within the country. America uses it trying to get people scared of all Muslims saying we are terrorists. Were not. And those quotes which have been taken from the Quran. They cant be just used alone. You have to read the whole story to understand them. Otherwise yeah I do agree we do sound threatening. But the fact is that Jihad can only be used if people are trying to destroy our religion. And that is exactly what is happening. The media in cirtain contries are trying to provoke the Muslims which will then give them a reason to hate us and bother us. Which results in doubt in the minds of Muslims. And in turn destroys our Religion. And by the way were not a cult. Please read the Original English Version of the Quran online and then come and tell us we are a cult. You wouldnt even dare withough knowing in your heart and mind that you are wrong. Anyways I have to go. Peace to everyone in the world. Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. Each religion should be respected doesnt matter which it is. If you respect, you will get respect.

You made a number of good

You made a number of good points there. I did a search on the issue and found the majority of folks will agree with your blog.

Letter from a Muslim

In the final analysis your muslim reader is saying, "if I don't like what you say then I have the right to stop you from saying it."

Why Islam is like this? Moderate ISLAM ....

Why Muslims react the way they do?
Submitted by A Kafir (not verified) on Sun, 2006-01-01 09:46.
See, one thing we have not understood till now is that Muslims are not exposed to the new world. They are always been suppressed at the hands of the Mullahs and the subjugation at the hands of the Lords in the Oil rich countries.

Secondly, they have the RIGHT to think that all those who don't beleive are KAFIRs and they should be coerced (say even through Tax like Jajiya)to get converted to Islam. Actually, this makes sense when we see Mohammad was trying to gain control over his territory.

Mohammad knew that writing pictures of him and the other 'Gods' during that time can make a big difference. Mother Mary, infant Jesus can give create much better atmosphere than the ones in Mideast.
Interstingly, even a PhD student the other day arguing with another fellow like this: If you don't believe in the writings of God, the Quran then you have to be answerable to God. Poor guy who doesn't know that if GOD is fair and exists, he will only look into your deeds than what you believe in or not!! Is GOD so SELF CENTERED?!! Gravitational pull works equally on the believers and non believers!!

It is this menatality and the circumstances have made Islam such a horrific religion. It is worthwhile to moderate Islam by the cartoons and critics. Since, the next generation needs peace for that we have to sacrifice a bit of ours. Danish news paper jas just started this bold step.

MODERATE ISLAM... AT ANY COST ...

Canadian views on freedom

As an intelligent and informed Canadian, I concluded after the Meech Lake Discord debacle that Canadians on average pride themselves on the outcomes of their ignorance and stupidity.

We have no rights. We have no freedoms. We have nebulous feel-good pap instead. We have recently had an obviously corrupt and evil regime. (It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the regime is corrupt and evil when it orders the RCMP to beat peaceful protestors with clubs after earlier subduing the same peaceful protestors with pepper spray.)

Whereas the American constitution and early amendments spell out the protections every individual can expect from collective power, Canadians get 'good government' without any description of what constitutes good government. By definition, whatever government we get is good:

Fascist discrimination in Quebec? Good government.

Widespread diversion of the people's treasury into the pockets of politicians and their cronies? Good government.

Sundry collectives get special rights and privileges with which to trump individual freedom? Good government.

If I want to criticize a religious leader for being a genocidal pedophile whose fractured and incoherent schizoid rants form the basis for a modern-day fascist-cult malignancy, I must not use my anglo-saxon tongue. As much as I might like to say what to do with 'short-eyes' and the camel he rode in on, I must not for fear the government of Canada will use its monopoly on violence to harm me. What do we call that in Canada? Good government.

The people of Canada seem to comprise sheeplike idiots and the wolves who fleece them. It's hard to tell in which cohort your letter writer belongs.

I doubt it

"We trust that the UN’s Louise Ardour, the EU’s Franco Frattini and the Council of Europe will respond in the same way to Bjorn Atldax’s jeans as to Jyllands-Posten’s cartoons, and demand that the Swedish government take the same actions as they want the Danish government to take. Or will they, too, prove themselves to be “very European”?"

It will not happen unless the Christian leaders make a loud protest.

What are the odds of that happening?

Zero

Canada has sacrificed freedom to cultural and moral relativism.

I quote:
"Even in a democratic society with strong protections for freedom of speech and press, there are still limits that must be imposed. (..)
Here in Canada, we have for many years had to reconcile a VERY multi-cultural society with our constitutional protections on freedom of speech and press. As a result, our basic freedoms are not absolute. We have a constitutional principal that basic rights are “subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.”"
The problem with the Canadian limits on freedom of speech and press is that they are not objective standards.
Anyone can claim that an opinion he doesn't like is hate propaganda, as muliculturalists have often done.
Man's Rights can only be violated by the initiation of force, by coercion. Only a ban on threats and incitement to violence constitutes a legitimate limit on the freedom of speech.
A multicultural society doesn't require any special limits on the freedom of speech.
Canada has sacrificed freedom to cultural and moral relativism.

To Nermin, about Mosques in Spain, apostates and everything

I allow me to point out to the fact that we are in 21st century now, not in the 15th (century of the reconquista). Well, medievial Spain was not a tolerant country. But the things are changed since then. In Sapin and in Europe.
But I think, and you must agree with me, that some countries did not changed since the medivial age.
Just to help you.
Please answer two questions:

- What a punishment sees shariah (islam law) for apostates (people who to convert from islam). ? If accidentely forgot, look at Qur'an (9:11, 12) in chapter 1.

- Which countrieas are adopted sharia as their official law?

to Mr Leiba Bronstein from nermin

You are right Mr we donot live in the 15 century but you ignored something too..it was also medieval and before it when muslims preserved the historical churches you see and you can visit till now when they entered these countries …so what what do you say..compare between the attitudes of the two in the same timing …churches never destroyed in islam …in quran and prophet hadith ,,,there are stressing on saving temples and churches….
Th e key and caring of cuddle church in jerusalem is the hand of a muslim family till now…without any complain …when islam entered Palestine and took it from roman the leader of muslim at that time called omar went there and he greeted the priests of the biggest church there ,then it came a time for the noon prayer so they said to omar to pray inside the church as any floor is suitable to pray on in isalm but omar refused and said he will pray outside for fear that muslism later on think to make it a mosque where he prayed or any conflict or sensitivity arise…have you seen how he was civilized and wise 1400 years ago.
regarding converting from islam…wea re free by our own laws and noone told you to be muslims and it is difficult to be applied as adulterous punishment for married person is diffcult to applied because it need 4 witness and the origin inisalm sharia laws is to cover the people not to disgrace them..

The Mohammad Drawings Affair

The conflict is escalating to absurd proportions and it seems impossible to resolve because it has two different issues.

For the Moslems: They feel that the drawings were a sacrilege against their religion and beliefs

For the Danish government and the press: A retreat is again the very core of democracy: the freedom of speech, the freedom of press.

I have been disgusted many times from jokes, drawings, films, and so forth that disrespect my own faith and beliefs. I do believe that humanity is better off respecting each other, not trying to impose on others our own thoughts and philosophy of life. It is both true for those who make a joke of everything and every body, and for those who can’t accept that anybody should believe anything besides their own beliefs. And I’m not just referring to Moslems, but to any religion and belief (including non-smokers, veganers and so forth).

The ideal world would be a place where everybody would accept the others just the way they are, and wouldn’t try to impose on others their way of living.

But this isn’t the ideal world. And freedom of speech is as holy to democracy as the prophet Mohammed is for the Moslems. If the government or the press gives in to censorship, what is going to be next? What about cows and rats, they are also holly for Indus, fat is abomination to health freaks, meat is abomination for veganers, Jews for Nazis and I can go on. Where would it stop?

Not to mention the self humor is a very good quality to have…

I don’t like the idea of a world without freedom, where you are afraid of what you might say and think. So when somebody disrespects my beliefs, I just remind that it doesn’t have anything to do with me and it doesn’t have the ability to affect what I believe in. Otherwise my faith and believes would have to be really weak. And I try to remember respecting the others' boundaries.

The Mohammed Drawings Affair

Why? Why? Why?

Well, such rhetoric! It is a simple case of freedom of speech! The only differnce between a Fundamentalist Christian and a Fundamentalist Muslim is they call god by different names and conduct their services in different languages. I notice both get "bent out of shape" when someone expresses an opinion different from their own or does not worship as they say exactly. I notice both really seem to get that *eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth vengeance thingie down pat*. I notice both seem to be willing to "blow up people, shoot people, maim people and threaten people in the name of their version of the one true and only Holy God!" (please neither groupd say you do not or Christian would not be out their killing doctors and blowing up clinics, or setting fire to their congregation i.e. David Khoresh in Texas, or Jim Jones in Central America,
or exhorting people to only vote the cross, or exhorting people to shoot other peoples elected Presidents ie. Rev. Falwell. Muslims would not be bombing children, men and women, kidnapping people and beheading them, haranguing, brainwashing and recruiting people for death squads. Decrying the Holocaust and calling others liars about it. If you really listen to both groups they are always moaning and crying and wailing about "death to the infidel dogs!" They would both censor, control, brainwash, destroy, and denigrate ANYTHING good and most assuredly everything bad. The trouble is everything is bad to both of them. I am sorely surprised they both have not "outlawed" singing, dancing, laughing, smiling, cartoons, candy, soda pop, popcorn or anything else inclined to make one smile, laugh or just guffaw. Maybe they were out of line, but you get out of line also at times. And if they were so pure they would not hide behind religion whenever doing their dirty work. Those Muslims are residing in "free societies" where they are allowed to dissent freely and complain. Their mouths would be stuffed with rags getting the stuffing beaten out of them if they were dissenting in many of their "own" homelands. Of course, that is not counted.. it is all about religion. Well they have religious freedom. They get to worship to their mosques in Denmark. The Danish government has not closed them. Or was not that the reason some went to Denmark, besides economic reason. That they belonged to differnt sects.. iee Sunni, Shiate, Alawite, etc. Because they belonged to different sects, they were being repressed. The Danes poke fun of Christianity also. Born to a Catholic and a Protestant, married and divorced a Muslim! I swear I think I have seen it all! Guess what! I am now a healthy, happy practicing PAGAN! GODS & GODDESSES BLESS US ALL!
Thank You Odin & Freya! Baldur save us!
I ran into their arms because of the Holy Christians and the Holy Muslims!
There are alternatives out there people!NOW! I expect someone to call me a non-believing infidel dog! And yet, I would lay down my life to defend your right to believe as you believe. I will not try to convert you at the point of a sword! I will not torture anyone until they confess their sins and share my one and true faith, as I have heard it phrased before. I will not decry either of you as the "Great Satans", kidnap you, kill you, maim you, try to commit genocide on you or against you. I will tolerate you, bite my tongue when needed and turn the other cheek. Both groups talk about compassion, tolerance etc...and they are so sincere as long as it does not mean the other guy might be right or have the right to say something different! In a "democracy" not everyone agress with everyone else about anything! EVERYONE at some time or other is offended about something or other. If you never want to get offended, your feelings, hurt, your nose out of joint or upset.. Then go home.. to whereever it was you came from first.. That is not directed at anyone group of people it is directed at ALL PEOPLE! EVERYWHERE! Because in a "democracy" that is what happens. A mind may be spoken. What is not allowed are death threats, kidnappings, bombings, assassinations, examples being made of. And if these folks were so secure at home they would not be sitting in other places throughout the world angry and ready to kick bum all the time. They would be at home in their former homelands governments face.. Shouting, gesticulating and raising holy heck about things there. But... they seem to be there in Denmark getting upset.
