No Esteem for Motherhood

A quote from Yvonne Roberts on The First Post, 21 February 2006
Society has created a surreal situation. A teenager who becomes pregnant in a deprived area will be treated mainly with approval by her community; in the absence of aspiration, motherhood is seen as a worthwhile endeavour. But when a girl with qualifications becomes pregnant, motherhood is regarded as a “waste” – a waste of her education and her career chances. It’s an attitude rooted in our essentially child-hating society.
