A quote from The [London] Sun, 20 April 2006

Jail bosses are rebuilding toilets so Muslim inmates don’t have to use them while facing Mecca. [...] The Islamic religion prohibits Muslims from facing or turning their backs on the Kiblah – the direction of prayer – when they visit the lav. Muslim lags claimed they have had to sit sideways on prison WCs. But after pressure from faith leaders the Home Office has agreed to turn the existing toilets 90 degrees at HMP Brixton in London.

The Home Office refused to reveal the cost of the new facilities – part of an “on-going refurbishment”. One Muslim former inmate said: “The least the Prison Service can do is make sure people can practise their religion correctly in prison.” But a Brixton jail officer said: “If they didn’t get locked up for committing crime they would not have this problem. Yet we have to sort out their loos. If we weren’t paying for it as taxpayers I’d laugh my socks off.”

toilets facing mecca

Assuming that you can see 30 degrees without turning your face, then 30/360 equals an 8.33% chance that you are facing exactly East. If you want to take the broad view that toilets in general face only in one of four approximate directions then there's a 25% chance you are facing East.

However, if it is that important you can always ride sidesaddle or simply turn around and face the other way. Toilets in prisons do not have movable flaps and there is more than enough room to face the other way.

Not an issue in the Gulf

In 12 years doing project and construction management in the Gulf over the past 20 years this is a new one. Never heard of this requirement. It's nonsense.

These people are just trying it on to see how far they can push it.

Facing Mecca

What are the chances that the person sitting on the toilet is actually facing Mecca or squatting in the direction of Mecca?

I wouldn't know how to do a mathematical analyses but it has to be a long-shot that the person is actually facing Mecca or in the direction of Mecca when he is on the toilet. Considering that it is thousands of miles from Mecca, the possibility that a person is facing Mecca or directly away from Mecca while on the toilet is remote.

Let's do a study to determine if sitting on the toilet would cause a person to directly face Mecca or away from Mecca!

Proportionate

It's seem only fair really. Muslims form such a disproportionately large section of our prison inmates that we might as well build suitable toilets for them. It might also be a good idea for our prison authorities to enforce the complete bans on drugs and alcohol favoured by Islam.

Hopefully that is a joke, but if it’s not political correctness have hit a new low, when will this appeasement of especially Muslims religious feelings end, apparently there is no end to the things you can get lefties and dhimmies to do for you if you join the violent religious cult of Islam, British taxpayers ought to hit the streets in force to tell the government that the political correct madness must stop, because if they don’t show their politicians that they will not stand for this, these politicians will keep on appeasing so not to lose the Muslim voters until the day a cleric takes their place.
