Europe's Unilateralism in Thought

A quote from Michael Rubin in National Review Online, 11 May 2006

Europeans may preach multilateralism and condemn unilateralism. But, increasingly, they seek multilateralism in action, but unilateralism in thought. True liberals and conservatives should band together to defend free speech. Intellectuals should understand that McCarthyism is government censorship, not criticism of their work or labels they dislike.

Europiean's Thought

The Europeans think that to don't give
trouble to many. But this is in their tought only. They are not fault finding of their work in McCarthyism government. Both mulitilateralism and unilateralism are wrong.

true liberals and conservatives v. the relativists v. two hordes

Michael Rubin said three things in that quote. I don't think I understood the first and third one, but the second one states precisely "what is to be done" today:

True liberals and conservatives should band together to defend free speech.

There's nothing else to be done until that is done. Europeans are hamstrung by the idea of "incitement" and its prohibition. It suffocates political dialogue. We have to break out of it.

I imagine that if we - true liberals and conservatives - are not able to restore freedom of expression in Europe then we will see European barbarians come charging out of the gates to do battle against the barbarians closing in on us. And the only way that will help is by weakening the grip of the relativists who have gained control of our civilization.
