425th Anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto, Oct. 7, 1571

A quote from Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936)

Don John of Austria has fired upon the Turk.
Don John’s hunting, and his hounds have bayed –
Booms away past Italy the rumour of his raid.
Gun upon gun, ha! ha!
Gun upon gun, hurrah!
Don John of Austria
Has loosed the cannonade.
[...] Vivat Hispania!
Domino Gloria!
Don John of Austria
Has set his people free!
[...] Don John of Austria rides home from the Crusade.

Which Europe?

Those verses of Chesterton fall short of telling the whole story..

The cold queen of England is looking in the glass;
The shadow of the Valois is yawning at the Mass;

... perhaps ignoring that both England and France wished for the victory of the Ottoman Sultan and the defeat of Spain. European soldiers they call the soldiers from Spain and from the Italian Republics in the linked article from the American WorldNetDaily.. which Europe? The "Europe" represented by England which serves the interests of America? or the "Europe" represented by France which is the craddle of the liberte, egalite, fraternite... "multiculturalite"? Or perhaps it is America --as strange to anything Europe as it can be-- which represents Europe making of it another land of Disney?

Only Russia is doing something right these days. The "West"? Never Disneyland has been a reality, and it will never be. Europe is an ideal.. or it will not be.

The battle of Lepanto

Events like the battle of Lepanto should remind us that victory over Islam, no matter how fearsome it might look like, it's possible.
In those days life in Southern European coasts was difficult. Muslim pirates were ever present, trade was disrupted, kidnappings were frequent, and, therefore, slavery.
For a country like Spain, which has already achieved its unity and a political and military victory over Islam, BUT whic it still harboured thousands of Muslims living in Spain, the fear was always that they could become a fifth column for the Ottomans.
However, on 7th October 1571, the West prevailed.
We should be able to do so again.
