Democracy and the Media Bias

Hello from Fjordman. 95 % of my essays will always be published first at either the Brussels Journal, the Gates of Vienna or Jihad Watch, but I will occasionally publish at some other blogs that I like or want to support. Here is a new essay published at the Democracy Reform blog, run by the excellent writer Ohmyrus, who also writes insightful essays about Islam:

Democracy and the Media Bias

excerpt:

In democratic societies the press, the Fourth Estate, should supposedly make sure that the government does its job properly as well as raise issues of public interest. In practice, we now seem to have a situation where the political elites cooperate with the media on making sure that some topics receive insufficient or unbalanced attention while others are simply kept off the agenda altogether. This isn't the case with all issues but with some more than others, especially those related to Multiculturalism, mass immigration and anti-discrimination where there seems to be a near-consensus among the elites. Together they form a new political class. This trend is recognizable all over the Western world, but it has become more deeply entrenched in Western Europe than in the USA, partly because more media outlets in Europe are either controlled by or at least sponsored by the state, but mainly because the political class has become formalized through the European Union.

In Europe, politics is more and more becoming an empty ritual. The real decisions are taken before the public even get a chance to vote on them , and the media won't talk honestly about important matters. Our daily lives are run by a bloated bureaucracy which is becoming increasingly transnational. Ever so slowly, everyone is reduced from being an individual to being a cogwheel in a giant machine, run by supposedly well-meaning administrators and technocrats. They don't really care about you; they just don't want anybody to rock the boat, so they constantly grease the bureaucratic machinery with lies.

Has nothing to do with hide. A system that facilitates hiding will not spawn but will perpetuate an illegal movement. You should be accurate in your assessment, you may not care for Fox News but you shouldn't misrepresent their statements.

Pro-women bias in media and academia

I forgot to mention women. The President of Harvard was fired for very mildly suggesting that there might actually be cognative differences in men and women that influence career choice. After protests, marches and sit ins he was shortly replaced by a WOMAN completing the PC takeover and yet consolodating more power in US academia for leftist moonbats. India and China have no such absurdities as far as I can tell and I expect the performance of their graduates to pass those of the former best US universities in the next decade or two.

US media bias vs. EU media bias

"This isn't the case with all issues but with some more than others, especially those related to Multiculturalism, mass immigration and anti-discrimination where there seems to be a near-consensus among the elites. I completely disagree.  Any intelligent discussion of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian is completely self-censored or censored through threats in the US.  Mearsheimer and Walt could not even get their paper on the Israel Lobby and their (treasonous) influence on US foreign policy even published in the US despite one even being a Dean at Harvard.  Any discussion of "african americans" and crime or underperformace is treated the same.  Despite the 1st amendment few americans have the courage to raise even a peep about either issue.  The US has different issues but the same or higher level of censorship.

However, I completely agree with this

" the EU would never have got to where it is." He believes the EU was intentionally designed this way: "Its founding fathers understood from the first that their audacious plan to merge the ancient nations of Europe into a single polity would never succeed if each successive transfer of power had to be referred back to the voters for approval. So they cunningly devised a structure where supreme power was in the hands of appointed functionaries, immune to public opinion. Indeed , the EU's structure is not so much undemocratic as anti-democratic.""

And this is completely accurate:

"The Dutch spirit appears to have been broken, at least for now, and things are slowly returning to normal. The extended political elites are once again firmly in control of public debate, and the embarrassing peasant rebellion has been successfully struck down.

I agree. However, the responsibility lies less with individual voters, not EU bureaucrats and politicians. Western European mass political culture has created this system that has taken on a life of its own, a culture based upon socio-economic insecurity and political naivety. The average German high school student is nationalistic and is concerned about the transition of their country to Neue Turkiye: however, because solving the 'minority' problem is more difficult and complex than separating green and brown glass, so they express political passion by rolling cardboard tanks down city streets to protest American foreign policy. Someone should inform skinheads everywhere that their deceased leader has done more to harm Whites than any other person, and I am not referring to the tens of millions of fair, blond and blue-eyed Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Latvians, Lithuanians, Estonians, Norwegians, Danes, Britons, Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, Czechs, Germans, Austrians, French, Italians, Belgians, Dutch, etc. that died as a result of his aggression. I am referring to the fear that Europeans have of nationalism, a fear that runs so deep that they are terrified of admitting the existence of their nations, let alone defending them. Fortunately, East-Central and Southeastern Europeans are aware of the usefulness of nationalism, given its role in the collapse of scientific socialism - and in their prior resistance against National Socialism.

Fjordman: "In democratic societies the press, the Fourth Estate, should supposedly make sure that the government does its job properly as well as raise issues of public interest."

Unfortunately, the "public interest" is difficult to define, let alone assuage.

Fjordman: "In practice, we now seem to have a situation where the political elites cooperate with the media on making sure that some topics receive insufficient or unbalanced attention while others are simply kept off the agenda altogether."

This brings to mind CNN, which began by over-hyping the case for invading and occupying Iraq both before, during and after the fall of the Ba'ath Party. However, CNN later "turned" on the hawks and while not occupying an extreme anti-war position, it certainly is no longer supportive of the White House. However, Fox News must "take the cake" for arguing that public healthcare spawned terrorism (i.e. in the UK) because terrorists could "hide" in the sprawling bureaucracy of the NHS in a way that they could not in a private medical clinic. Linking the "War on Terror" to the public vs. private healthcare debate was a laughable answer to Sicko, Fahrenheit 9/11, etc., on the part of News Corp.

Fjordman: "This isn't the case with all issues but with some more than others, especially those related to Multiculturalism, mass immigration and anti-discrimination where there seems to be a near-consensus among the elites. Agreed. I do commend CNN for permitting significant anti-immigration/multiculturalism/political correctness perspectives from the likes of Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs and others. I would counter that political elites are not so much attempting to "form a new political class"; rather, they are pandering to special interest groups because, quite frankly, the majority is apathetic. Clearly there are political organisations in Western Europe with platforms involving substantial changes to immigration and integration policy, including even repatriation. However, Western European voters are scared to vote for them because of the accusations of anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia, etc. slung like so much indiscriminate mud at these parties. It seems as though Muslims are more determined and united in conquering the West than Westerners are determined to protect either their self-determination or their individual liberties. Instead of combating Islamic terror, Westerners should "fight fear" - as declared by Canadian Forces recruiting advertisements - their own.

unbalanced media

There is more than a mere bias or imbalance in the media. Most of the main stream media has embraced the ideology of the extreme left!

" Multiculturalism, mass immigration and anti-discrimination where there seems to be a near-consensus among the elites "

The word "elites" is a misnomer. It comes from the word "elected", but the leftist "elites" who rule the media have not been elected for their intellectual powers. They have not been democratically elected either. I see them as phony fakes who kill intellectual life.

In politics, people who succeed tend to keep their own opinions to themselves. They behave a little like sales representatives. I am sure that most small politicians resent the current policy of mass immigration. They just go with the flow. They are afraid to speak their minds.

" because the political class has become formalized through the European Union. "

And how did the EU come to promote mass immigration?
It has nothing to do with the original intent of the institution.
