Merry Christmas

Gloria in excelsis Deo,
et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis!

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Twelve drummers drumming,
Eleven pipers piping,
Ten lords a-leaping,
Nine ladies dancing,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree!

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit – Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit – Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

Merry (Twelve Days of) Christmas, Everyone...

Why is it that everytime.....

...I hear Ronaldus Magnus speak, I get goosebumps?...We miss you Dutch....What a great message.....Merry Christmas to all here on the Brussles Journal, and the best for a peaceful, prosperous 2008.....

Merry Christmas to all

but especially to you, Paul and family.   May God protect, keep, comfort, and secure you under His wings in perfect safety for many years.  And, may all of your noblest endeavors succeed.  Remember, the mark of the "hero" is his ability to persist in being deaf to the noise and the rabble,  because his attention is fixed steadily on the Good, which they do not, and cannot always hear clearly.  And, THANK GOD for Ronald Reagan.   A Blessed Nativity to all in our Lord, God, and Savior...Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas

To everyone here...

And thanks for the little history lesson... never knew that about that carol.
