The Tip of the Iceberg

A quote from The Independent on Sunday, 10 February 2008
Up to 17,000 women in Britain are being subjected to "honour" related violence, including murder, every year, according to police chiefs. And official figures on forced marriages are the tip of the iceberg, says the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). It warns that the number of girls falling victim to forced marriages, kidnappings, sexual assaults, beatings and even murder by relatives intent on upholding the "honour" of their family is up to 35 times higher than official figures suggest.

I fail to understand why this is newsworthy. Such misogynistic violence is commonplace in non-European/Western cultures. Given that the United Kingdom has elected to construct a society more representative of the world, it has also elected to import not only foreigners, but their problems. Nor does British birth seem to make a marked difference in terms of ethnic, national and cultural affinities. So long as this criminal activity has no repercussions for ethnic Britons, the police and prosecutorial services should concentrate their energies in more relevant areas. If they choose to tackle non-White honor violence and murder, the British government might as well embark on a global crusade as place of residence and birth, and passport pale in comparison to the reflection in the mirror as far as determining identity is concerned nowadays.
