Imagine: Europe to Relax Free Speech Laws…

EUobserver reports that Turkey is to ease curbs on free speech.

The Turkish parliament is likely to pass a bill next week softening a law which sets limits on freedom of speech by criminalising “insults to Turkishness.” One article in the country's penal code - article 301 - currently imposes up to three years in prison for such an insult. The EU has repeatedly called on Turkey to “repeal or amend without delay” the controversial article as a prerequisite to join the bloc.

Imagine the European Parliament passing a bill softening laws which set limits on freedom of speech by criminalising “insults to Islam.” Some European penal laws currently impose up to two years in prison for such an “insult.”…

301 needs to be scrapped, period

This is just adding another layer of indirection over an article that needs to be thrown out, if Turkey is to live up to European standards for freedom of expression.

Personally, I prefer that they keep 301 and keep out.

Lazy Monarchist/Fascist

You don't understand what a democracy is, apparently.

Democracy is messy and a lot of work.  That means every individual voter has a duty to keep up with the issues, and maintain communication with his representatives.  That also means a lot of fighting.  Do you know how frequently I shoot off letters to my Congressman and Senators?  How frequently I have to keep track of what they are doing, what they are voting on, and what committees they sit in?  It's arduous and difficult.  But it's my duty and responsibility to watch them, and let them know that they are being watched.  It's also my duty as an American citizen to inform my family, friends and acquaintances of what issues we need to inform ourselves and what is going on in our government, and when we need to take action and communicate, as well as vote.

From what I see, Mr. Monarchist/Fascist, you're too lazy for democracy.  You want a king-daddy to take care of it all for you so you don't have to think or act.  You're not only lazy, but arrogant, since you think that your position is the only valid one, and no one else has a right to differ, even if you are morally correct.  Thank goodness God isn't so arrogant, since he created us with a free will, which would involve making wrong decisions and sin.  However, because he values each of us individually, he is willing to give us the benefit of the doubt and to live freely - by our own choice.  You, in your arrogant, lazy and fascist way, would FORCE your way on people, whether they wish it or not.

That's why you're a fascist.

Does it really need repeating?  Monarchist does not understand "democracy".  Hence, he is confused by the observation that 'Marxists' in Europe (and elsewhere) pass all sorts of laws that undermine freedom of speech.

Europe is NOT a land "filled with democrats" or, more accurately, it is NO LONGER a land filled with democrats.  If it were, various parliaments in Western Europe would not pass such laws.

Just like Monarchist does not seem to understand that his ideal "monarch" cannot last, and his monarchical successor can easily turn into a monster - historical precedents galore! - he cannot grasp that "democracy" is a political system that requires a number of cultural pre-conditions.  The most important of these is tolerance for/of (political) free speech.  Democracy is very hard to acquire over the centuries, but it can be very easily lost in a single generation.  Such is the lesson of 'recent' European history.

@ovalteen

How is possible that Marxist run Europe, the land filled by democrats?

Free speech

Muslims -- and who can blame them? -- have merely taken advantage of earlier laws against "race hate" and Holocaust denial. Those laws need repealing too. Islam is not the real problem Europe faces: Marxism is. Muslims are only here because Marxists wanted them here, as part of their long campaign to smash the old order.
