Sarkozy Champions Protectionism
From the desk of The Brussels Journal on Fri, 2006-11-10 14:40
[Globalisation is] the cause of the protest vote and the rallying of increasingly large parts of the population to protectionist arguments. […] Europe needs protection. The word protection does not frighten me.
The split widens

If even center-right politicians in Europe are protectionist, that portends an ever-widening split between Europe and the United States. (The Europeans, of course, will insist that American markets should remain open to their goods, while at the same time they block the importation of American goods.) Sarkozy's statement provides yet another reminder to Americans that we must meet European intransigence with intransigence of our own and accept (celebrate?) the widening split between our cultures at a time when anti-democratic immigrants are beginning to impose their political will on France and other European countries. Thank you, M. Sarkozy, for saving us the trouble of disengaging from our former allies as they head toward civil war.

The comment from McMad was totally off-topic with respect to protectionism, which is an economic concept. All subsequent comments to McMad are also off topic. In the future, such off-topic comments will be deleted.
If you want to comment on islam, do it under articles that have something to do with islam. Not on articles that are purely economic.

Quite so. After all there are plenty to choose from. But it wasn't what I would call an article in the first place - it was a 31 word quotation from a politician.

I am stunned that you would make such a comment about the Dixie Chicks. I don't consider their political opinions of any import or relevance, however, the backlash against them (incl. death threats, etc.) is unnecessary.
However, I agree that it was better when "we" were competing with each other, as opposed to the Muslims or China. Muslim terrorism just doesn't hold the same interest for me as the Irish Troubles, ETA, or the West German Red Army. And China doesn't have that same monolithic and implacable feel that the Eastern Bloc did. Communist, Fascist, and National Socialist sympathizers could be anyone, whereas Chinese communism is a veneer for run-of-the-mill authoritarian ethnic nationalism.

FLLaw has it right, Kapitien. I would waste no tears on any of the media idiots who make statements that border on or cross the line to treason. It is time the public holds them to account, for like it or not, they have a tremendous influence on the way the world views the US. I am in Europe and the Europeans know little about the real US, but know much about the little anti-US soundbites made by the leftist media. Their leftist leadership is happy to repeat it themselves.
Europe lives in a leftist vacuum. It is perpetuated by the news from "US" news channels such as CNN which is as much or more leftist than their own, and the repeated statements from the leftist actors, actresses and entertainers. There is no competing news here that I am aware of.

"Think of all the inane Arabic words we've had to learn! Jihad, Taqiya, Hezbolla, burka, and many more..."
Don't forget "assassin", that's a word they gave us too.
Funny, how they don't have a word for "integrity"...

Are you suggesting that the West's treatment of the Arabs has been characterised by integrity?
Well, it's an interesting notion.

I think you've missed my point. The very fact that you can criticize the West's treatment of Arabs as lacking in "integrity" reflects that it's a viable concept in the West. What does it mean when the word doesn't even exist in a society?

Are you saying that the West's behaviour towards the Arabs can't be adequately described or expressed in Arabic?
By the way, which of the several meanings of "integrity" are you claiming doesn't have an equivalent in Arabic?

in‧teg‧ri‧ty /ɪnˈtɛgrɪti/
–noun 1. adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.
2. the state of being whole, entire, or undiminished: to preserve the integrity of the empire.
3. a sound, unimpaired, or perfect condition: the integrity of a ship's hull.
Honesty...
When the false "god" Allah of the Quarn via Islamic writings teach that LYING is ok, then I find Islam devoid of "integrity", i.e. Honesty.
Muhammad said: "Lying is wrong, *except in three things: the lie of a man to his wife to make her content with him; a lie to an enemy, for **war is deception; or a lie to settle trouble between people" (Ahmad, 6.459. H).
(...) *Islam is the only religion that implies in it's scriptures that it's ever permissible to lie.
(...) **any non Muslim land is considered Dar ul Harb a land of war
(...) The name of this concept is taqiyya.
The book "The spirit of Islam," by the Muslim scholar, Afif A. Tabbarah was written to promote Islam. On page 247, Tabbarah stated: "Lying is not always bad, to be sure; there are times when telling a lie is more profitable and better for the general welfare, and for the settlement of conciliation among people, than telling the truth. To this effect, the Prophet says: 'He is not a false person who (through lies) settles conciliation among people, supports good or says what is good."

Well, I don't see myself as Defender of the Islamic Faith, but to me it's more honest to say it's sometimes better to lie than to pretend we can go round telling the truth all the time.

Dear McMad:
You stated "How long before things like this start to happen in Europe: Beheaded girls were ramadan trophies".
Please tell me they were the Dixie chicks!!! :)
Seriously though...did you ever ever in your wildest dreams when you were younger ever think the world would be in this kind of situation dealing with Islam?
I was born in 1960. For me the Soviet Union was the threat. Communism, the domino theory, and "duck and cover". I almost look with nostalgia to those days. I almost think the preposterous thought that the Soviet Union was a good thing and long as you weren't the one to have to live there when I see what is going on today.
Think of all the inane Arabic words we've had to learn! Jihad, Taqiya, Hezbolla, burka, and many more. I never dreamt in the 1970's, 1980's, even part of the 1990's, that this obscure Middle Eastern cult would be now a major part of my life, my country, Europe, and the whole world. It is as if I went through a dimensional shift.

There was a show on the Sci-Fi channel called "Sliders", the crew of four would go through or slide into this vortex they created with a timer that placed them in and on a parallel earth. The day and time would be the same, but for each earth they traveled to could be nearly identical to vastly different depending on the varied outcomes of the past. In other words, enter into a world where Germany won WWII. Or a world where the Soviets conquered the world. Or a world where the dinosaurs did not die off.
That is what I almost feel here. I am in some parallel universe. The world looks still the same in most ways, but now there is this world wide every growing cancer, called Islam, that is doing what Hitler and Stalin, Malenkov, Khruschev,Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko, and Gorbachev, could not do and that is take over a major part of the world.
If I were Dorothy of Oz, I would click my heels for I'm not in Kansas anymore.
