What A Pity London Isn’t Islamic (Yet)

A quote (not a joke) from Michael Hodges in Time Out London, 5 June 2007

An Islamic London would be a better place. [...] Alcohol is haram, or forbidden, to Muslims. As London is above the national average for alcohol-related deaths in males [...] turning all the city’s pubs into juice bars would have a massive positive effect on public health. [...]

Eldorado or Home. Europeans' Flight from Europe

Last year more than 155,000 Germans emigrated from their native country. Since 2004 the number of ethnic Germans who leave each year is greater than the number of immigrants moving in. While the emigrants are highly motivated and well educated, "those coming in are mostly poor, untrained and hardly educated," says Stephanie Wahl of the German Institute for Economics.

A Continent of Losers

The migration waves now hitting Europe are unprecedented in human history, and far, far greater in scope and speed than those which brought down the Roman Empire in the 5th century. Newsweek writes about “Europe’s invisible illegals”:

European authorities are becoming nervous about burgeoning Pakistani populations in places – such as Italy, Spain and France – where there were few or none at all just a few years ago. Now numbering in the hundreds of thousands, many of these Pakistanis have sneaked onto the Continent via Iran, Turkey and the Balkans. They’ve also begun taking a circuitous route across Africa and then by ship to Spain’s Canary Islands or the Mediterranean coasts of Europe. Almost overnight, Pakistani neighborhoods have sprung up in Barcelona and Bologna. Increasing numbers of Pakistanis now use Africa as their stepping stone. The Pakistanis, who must travel longer distances, pay traffickers almost 10 times as much as Africans do – from $11,000 to $20,000 – to get them in. In some cases they are also guaranteed help for two or three attempts to make it across the frontier. Some fly first to East Africa or the Sahara. It’s now common for African and European patrols to intercept boats carrying scores of South Asians bound for Europe.

Germany Loses Its Brains

A quote from Tony Paterson in The Independent, 1 June 2007

Figures released by Germany’s Federal Statistics Office showed that the number of Germans emigrating rose to 155,290 last year [...]. Leading economists and employers say the trend is alarming. [...] OECD figures show that Germany is near the top of a league of industrial nations experiencing a brain drain which for the first time since the 1950s now exceeds the number of immigrants. [...]

Yesterday, the country’s woes were underscored by a report which disclosed that areas of unemployment-wracked eastern Germany were populated by a “male-dominated underclass susceptible to far right ideology” because of a dramatic 25 per cent exodus of young women aged 18 to 29.

Commission Accused Of Meddling in Belgian Election

Tribune-de-Bruxelles.jpg

The Belgian Commissioner, Louis 'Le Gob' Michel is standing for election to the Belgian Senate on June 10th for the Mouvement Reformateur (Wallon Liberals) and is in the centre of a storm inside the European Commission.

Back in the end of January the Commission admin decided that, along with the European Voice and various news sources, to try a three month trial of dumping Belgian newspaper "Tribune de Bruxelles" onto official's desks. The idea was that there would be a three month trial, followed by a consultation with staff. Five months later the paper is still being dumped and this is causing ructions. The first complaints were naturally linguistic, it is in French, and thus the Flemish were upset. Then people began to notice that the paper's previous 'constructive critical' line of EU doings had been replaced with slavish obeisance to all things European. After all access to the officials is one hell of a selling point to advertisers.

That is bad enough but in the last few weeks things have become even more serious.

The Tribune is without a shadow of doubt a paper which supports the MR. In the current edition, prominent on the front page is a delightful ad for Frederique Ries, currently an MEP and also standing for the MR in the elections. Rumours abound that DG Admin has been under pressure from Mr Michel's team to continue the experiment.

Loss of Life

A quote from Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh, 31 May 2007

In those 40 years [since abortion was legalised in Scotland] the loss of life has been staggering. Around 7 million lives have been ended as a consequence of that one piece of legislation […] the scale of the killing is beyond our grasp. In Scotland we kill the equivalent of a classroom full of school children every day.

A Nation of Immigrants

David Conway's short book produced by Civitas, made a small splash when it was published a few weeks ago. What is said in it is hardly contentious, despite what some of those who govern us might say. Essentially it is a brief historical overview on migration to Britain over the ages, in the light of the discovery that all four of those responsible for the London bombings were born and brought up in the UK. Starting with the post Ice Age arrival of a few thousand hunter-gatherers it rapidly brings us up to date with a discussion of recent mass migration from the subcontinent and the Eastern European countries of the EU. His basic thesis is that indeed we are not a nation of immigrants as many in the multicultural industry would have it, but a clearly defined, and until recently pretty homogenous lot.
