Brussels Berserk: Belgium Forbids 18 and 88

Patrick Dewael, the Belgian minister of the Interior, has forbidden the wearing of football shirts displaying the numbers 18 and 88. According to the Liberal minister the number 18 stands for “Adolf Hitler” and the number 88 for “Heil Hitler.” A is the 1st letter of the alphabet, H the 8th.

The numbers 37 (Che Guevara) or 13 (Mao) are not forbidden. Neither are the popular T-shirts with Che Guevara’s portrait.

One reader in a Brussels paper wondered whether citizens living in houses with the numbers 18 and 88 will be blacklisted as Nazis by the authorities. Young people born in 1988, who have email addresses containing their year of birth, are worried too.

@Flanders Fields

"Jewkiller" is a common surname found throughout Africa and West Asia, however, I can't remember what it means in Arabic...

Occupancy

I have to post this comment from Battle for Britain's link to this post.  The discussion was about various other numbers which should be banned.  Then, this was added:

"I understand that seat no. 666 in the EU Parliament is vacant.

Awaiting its occupant."

Priorities?

When the Flemish community is asking for more authority & means, the current leftist regime always cries 'there are other priorities in this country, like jobs' etc...Oh yes, 'forbidding numbers' too! And we actually pay these morons...

@George2

I am afraid that I do not share your view of the Holocaust as being sacrosanct. Anyone with a broad knowledge of history knows that such barbarism was not uncommon, nor its perpetrators and victims exclusive.

F.e. currently, the Thirty Years War is being revised by scholars, particularly the number of fatalities, whether those fatalities were attributable to famine, disease, or war, and the conduct of soldiery at the time. Death toll statistics are being reduced from roughly 30% of the German population to 20% (varying by region), mainly because population movement and resettlement was counted in the death toll.

I despise the comparison of the BNP, FN and others with National Socialism and Fascism not because it somehow insults the victims of the latter movements, but because the comparison is incorrect and a mud-slinging campaign.

@ Kapitein Andre

I like your analysis too. However, it goes further. The Left systematically connects everything they don't like with nazism either by calling it nazism or by insinuating it. What nazism did, is so terrible bad that it becomes 'sacred': it should betreated with a lot of respect.

I believe it was Saint Augustin who said that saying something about God is automatically wrong because equalling God with one thing means that you don't mention all the other things. I believe the same counts for the Devil or Evil as the opposite of God. In this sense, the suffering caused by nazism becomes sacred.

By abusing the legacy of nazism and its results to promote one's own political ideas or to attack political opponents, nazism becomes trivial. In stead,the 'sacred suffering' needs to be reveired.

It is also the systematic abuse of the suffering of the millions of victims of nazism for one's own agenda. It is the ultimate example of disrespect. It is digusting. In stead of bowing solemny to this 'sacred suffering' it is abused whenever possible. None of the victims is asked to say if they agree that their suffering can be used. Therefore it is abuse.

Colts Jinx: Belgium bans 18 and 88

A bad omen for Peyton Manning and the Colts: from Brussels Journal…..

“Patrick
Dewael, the Belgian minister of the Interior, has forbidden the wearing
of football shirts displaying the numbers 18 and 88. According to the
Liberal minister the number 18 stands for “Adolf Hitler” and the number
88 for “Heil Hitler.” A is the 1st letter of the alphabet, H the 8th.”

Question– If Peyton Manning goes ahead and wears this offensive jersey number, does that mean he is a Nazi?

If Colts fans cheer for Manning while he wears the offensive jersey number, then does this mean Colts fans are Nazis?

My prediction: Jinx, Schminx — Bear 28, Colts 12.

88

Which football club has an eighty-eight man squad?

18

Stupidity on display.

Incidentally, Jews consider 18 is a good number because it is the numerology sum of "life" (Chai - the "ch" pronounced as in "loch"). Hebrew letters "Chet" and "Yod" sum to 18.

So, where is their cultural sensitivity?

A good analysis

A good analysis and well stated, Kapitein.  I think you have described the basic psyche of those running (and ruining) Europe.

Note to Flemish American:  I was not serious and you are correct that it is difficult to tell during these times.  Common sense has packed its bags and left.

Choosing their battles...

The political elites of Western Europe operate according to a single maxim, namely the prevention of war such as those two global conflicts that devastated the continent in the first half of the twentieth century. Like many idealists, they regard human history as a linear process and therefore are quite willing to overrule any and all traditions and affinities that appear to create the slightest possibility of armed conflict. Aside from consciously or subconsciously believing that individual and social human nature can be engineered, these elites remain elites in that they do not believe in individuals or groups governing themselves, and thus disapprove of individual choice and grassroots approaches to social change.

They have fostered economic, military, and political co-operation amongst the various states of Western Europe and have actively repressed nationalism in favour of equality and equity, while equally criticising attempts at greater individual liberty. Because the nation and the individual remain crucial units in human civilisation, the elites allow restricted expressions of both. Nationalism is directed against the United States, because anti-Americanism will not result in a war; greater individual liberties are granted to minority groups because this will not result in further inequality...or so goes the logic. Western Europeans would rather separate green glass from brown, hunt down Fascists and National Socialists, and criticise American foreign policy than act on immigration, Islamic aggression, immigrant crime, or economic stagflation - because dealing with the first is easy, dealing with the latter problems means tough decision-making.

Unfortunately, far from preventing future bloodshed, these elites are setting Europe up for a repeat of the Thirty Years War, a chaotic nightmare without clean front lines only vengeance, opportunism, and basic survival - except this time there are arsenals of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons to complicate things.

Hard to take anyone serious

I'm still trying to figure out if Flanders Fields is serious.  I suppose if we took long enough, we'd find something insulting in about every number, saving our kids from the nightmares of mathematics forever.    Give me a break.

Lord, grant me the strength to change the things I can;

the serenity to deal with the things I cannot change;

and the wisdom to know the difference.

Common sense approaches are commendable

I commend Dewael for his common sense and scientific approach. It is time that someone recognized the significance of numbers in obtaining social and scientific enlightenment.

He needs to go further and ban 34 and 49, which are much more viable econometric factors for global warming than the combination all other factors cited by European leaders and the world press. Enviornmental havoc created by 34 and 49, particularly when those numbers are added together, demand a ban. Failing to do so would have an exponential effect and subject the world to horrific consequences which are truly unimaginable by our frail human intellects. An additional factor is that even the obtuse Americans could participate in the solution with minimal effect on the worlds eco-systems.

As hilarious as this is, it

As hilarious as this is, it is a disturbing sign that something is radically wrong with a lot of folks. I've seen something like this before in people. They aren't hollering about what's really bothering them, though. These people are scared. And this bizarre nonsense is just a distraction from what's really scaring them. Terrifying them.

And I am stunned that a minister can just limit the right to free expression, violating the right to privacy by dictating what people may WEAR without even an act of an elected legislature. I thought European nations were democracies(?)
