Belgian Waffle

A quote from the editorial of The Washington Times, 14 September 2007

If tiny Belgium splits in two, the European Union has a signal warning at its doorstep: Unresponsive government’s fissures eventually turn into major breaches and perhaps even bring about the state’s destruction. […] Taxation and underrepresentation are the essential watchwords. Capitalistic and Dutch-speaking Wallonia [sic -- this should be Flanders, (tbj)] generates about 70 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). With the top income-tax rate at 50 percent and the nation’s public outlays constituting a staggering 46 percent of GDP, it is not hard to see who benefits from tax-and-spend Eurosocialism and who is hurt by it. Capital of the EUSSR 5: Jews Not Welcome in Brussels

The following witness account by a German woman was published on the Politically Incorrect blog [in German].  This is an English translation:

After an approximately six hours drive, we (my three passengers and I) arrived in Brussels and went into the metro, to go from the Maelbeek station to the Luxembourg place. In the upper part of the station, policemen stopped a fellow passenger and myself and accused us of wanting to participate in the demonstration. The other two passengers managed to stay unnoticed and escaped the arrest. The policemen stated they would have to take us into administrative custody. The arrest was confirmed by radio. After further inquiry, they explained that the reason for the arrest was the display of the European flag, the black-red-gold colours [German flag, note of the translator] on a sign as well as my Israel flag. The German flag in postcard size, likewise fastened to my backpack, did not attract any attention.

Even longer negotiations with the fortunately predominantly Flemish policemen (the present French speaking policemen, treated my fellow passenger quite rudely), at the metro led to no result. The offer to cover and stow the flag and sign in the backpack and go away, led to nothing. There was no request to leave, no reading of rights, nothing. Consider this: we had not even left the metro at this time, and were neither at the Schuman nor at the Luxembourg place. At least we could convince them not to put handcuffs on us and to mark our personal things, so that they would not get lost.

Some Reflections on the Failure of Political Leadership in Britain

I have written nothing on politics in over two months. For reasons that I think it would be tasteless to broadcast in advance, my home circumstances seem about to change so profoundly that I am not sure how much time I shall have for political writing of any kind. This may, therefore, be my last commentary for a while. And so I will write about what I see as the main failure of political leadership in this country since the forced retirement of Margaret Thatcher in November 1990.

Proud Times for Canada

As Canadian Louise Arbour, the UN’s Human Rights Commissioner, was shamelessly sitting alongside Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, at a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran last week, Elections Canada announced that Muslim women would be allowed to wear identity-concealing face veils, including full burqas, when voting in Canadian elections. Covered Muslim women will merely have to show two pieces of identification to vote (though no one has explained how the official in charge of the ballot box that day will be able to match the face to the picture on the ID), and/or swear an oath and have another voter vouch for them.

Abolish Belgium?

In the early 1990s, following the fall of Communism, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia fell apart. Today, the federal Kingdom of Belgium, the last of Europe's multinational states, is beginning to unravel.

You Can’t Make It Up: Belgium’s New Ambassador to Paris Is the Old One

The Belgian Council of State (CoS) has ordered the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to reinstate Pierre-Dominique Schmidt as Belgian ambassador to Paris. Two weeks ago, the ambassador was recalled to Brussels after a bank discovered that he had forged Foreign Office documents in order to obtain bank loans to pay for his luxurious life style. The homosexual ambassador had been throwing regular private disco and drag parties costing up to 75,000 euros. Schmidt was recalled to Brussels and replaced as ambassador by Baudouin de la Kethulle de Ryhove.

Council of Europe Backs Belgian Authorities: “Europe Is Threatened by Bigots – Not by Islam”

Last Tuesday the police authorities in Brussels, the “capital of Europe,” brutally attacked peaceful demonstrators protesting the Islamization of Europe. Even the European Commission was shocked at the appalling behaviour of the Brussels police, but the officers seem to have their fans as well.

This is a press release (590/2007) issued on Tuesday by Terry Davis, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

A quote by John-Henry Westen at LifeSiteNews.com, 12 September 2007:

A September 11 demonstration against the "Islamization of Europe", where protesters planned a moment of silence to commemorate the 9/11 tragedy in the United States, was banned by the Socialist mayor of Brussels Freddy Thielemans claiming he feared "chaos and security threats".  Despite the ban, over 200 Belgians went ahead with a peaceful demonstration and joining them were the several prominent pro-life politicians. What then transpired is something reminiscent of Tiananmen Square. (...)
